Accent Your Ceramic or Porcelain Tile Green Watcher / Aug 25, 201102.01.2010

At a loss for how to jazz up your upcoming ceramic or porcelain tile project?  Not happy with the few flower or fruit listello and liner choices available with the ceramic tile you have chosen for your kitchen or bathroom project? Look no further than the wonderful possibilities available with glass mosaic tile.

Glass mosaics come in more colors than one can imagine. You can choose between various shapes, mosaic blends or solid colors, paper faced, mesh mounted, or even dot mounted tiles, and of course 1” x 1”, 2” x 2”, or 3” x 3” sizes. Glass tile finishes might include iridescent, translucent, or the standard glossy finish that is most commonly found on today’s glass tile products. Custom blends of mosaic tile are often available where you can choose any pairing of colors by specifying the percentages of each color they want used in your blend. At GREENABLE, we offer custom blends in our Fireclay Crush and Hakatai tile lines as well as several others available at our building + design centers.

The nice thing about using glass mosaics is that because of the way the glass is mounted it makes it quite easy to cut the material by slicing the mesh backing in to strips of almost any size and use these strips as an accent piece for your design project. Most glass tile come as 12” x 12” (or close to that) mounted sheets. As an example, let’s say a 3” accent strip is desired to highlight the ceramic tile that was installed in a shower or on a kitchen backsplash. Glass tile is mounted as 1” rows of tile so in thiscase one wouldsimply cut the mesh orthe paper after the thirdrow of glass to create what becomes a 3” x 12” beautiful glass tile liner.

Another benefit of using glass mosaic tile as a liner is that it is a very affordable decorating option. In the above case where the homeowner wants a 3” decorative liner piece, cutting a 3” strip off of a 12” sheet leaves 9” more of useable material. So, if your project requires you to run this liner around the entire wall you will be able to cut four useable sheets from a 12” x 12” sheet of glass tile. For glass mosaic tile that may cost $20 per square foot this means that the four 3” x 12” liners that would come from each sheet would cost only $5 per liner. Sweet!

For the wide selection of colors available, the affordability of this option, and for the unmatched beauty that glass tile affords there are not many better options for accenting.
